The Right Questions
How do we make our cucumber vodka?
By hand, and slowly. We shred fresh cucumber and macerate it in vodka for 48 hours, then fine-filter and strain it so nothing but the clean, green flavor is left. Then we bring it down to strength with an elderflower tea we brew ourselves. The cucumber and the elderflower in Number 3 are in the vodka itself, not added afterward.
Why habanero? Isn't it super spicy?
Not the way we use it. In this amount the heat lands closer to a jalapeño than the habanero’s reputation suggests. We chose it because its fruity, floral heat pairs with cucumber vodka in a way jalapeño cannot, drawing out beautiful vegetal notes. The cucumber cools it and the lime and elderflower keep it in balance. It is a warmth on the finish, not a burn.
What does elderflower taste like?
Delicate and floral, with a sweetness that reads like pear, lychee, and honey. It is the note that keeps Number 3 soft and aromatic, sitting between the cool cucumber and the bright citrus.
Best glassware and garnish, if you want to get fancy?
A tall glass packed with ice, with a long ribbon of cucumber run down the inside of the glass. A rocks glass works just as well. Add a lime wheel if you want a second color.
